Not only was the Mike Tyson vs Jake Paul event a joke, but Netflix couldn’t cope with the traffic from its subscribers!
On 15 November, millions of viewers faced major buffering issues during the biggest fight of the year. This is the first time Netflix has been involved in a sporting event of this scale. There are rumours that the UFC is eyeing them as a future partner when the contract with ESPN expires, but some are already having second thoughts following this fiasco.
Some people even exited the app thinking that would sort the problem, but it only made things worse. Sometimes, when they reopened the app, the fight would start from the beginning; others got stuck at 25% of the total data required to start watching the fight (buffering) and the fight never resumed.
Let’s hope Netflix has learnt something from this mess and is grateful that there are other ‘providers’ available to save the day. It will be interesting to see if there is any drop in subscribers due to this error. One thing I’m sure of is that I won’t be cancelling my alternative IPTV service any time soon, as it serves as a fabulous backup for moments like this.
