A fibre-optic exchange is the hub for traffic routing and distribution within a given area. In a city, depending on its size, there may be one or more of these.
They are usually unmarked buildings designed to be as inconspicuous as possible. After all, nobody wants to draw attention to such a critical location.
They essentially consist of tens, hundreds or even thousands of fibre optic connections linking servers and customers at the speed of light.
Imagine the care and organisation required to keep one of these sites running. A poorly connected or mislabelled cable can affect hundreds of customers and communications.
5G itself and our mobile ‘Internet’ ultimately rely on these centres.
The curious thing is that, despite their importance, almost nothing is said about the technicians who set them up and keep them running…
