You probably rely on Bluetooth more than you realise, even if you take the wireless communication protocol for granted – and Bluetooth 6.0 is now official, bringing with it a range of significant new improvements.
The official announcement from the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG), which includes members such as Intel, Apple and Google, highlights some of the updates we can expect when Bluetooth 6.0 devices start to appear.
There is a strong emphasis on improving filtering and efficiency, so that Bluetooth devices only communicate with each other when necessary and do not transmit redundant data. This, in turn, should reduce the strain on device battery life.
More efficient transmissions should also mean faster transfer speeds, even though the core Bluetooth speed has not changed. Potentially, this means that devices such as the best fitness trackers should sync and update more quickly than before.
The most notable new feature of the specification – although it is not necessarily supported by all Bluetooth 6.0 devices – is called Channel Sounding, and it means that two devices supporting this feature will be able to determine the distance between them more accurately, over a wide area and down to a single centimetre (around 0.4 inches).
This means that ‘Find My Device’ services from Apple, Samsung, Google, Tile and others are set to become more accurate and responsive across a wider range of devices. The improved wireless technology could also assist with tasks such as unlocking cars and smart locks.
Currently, Apple’s Find My service uses ultra-wideband (UWB) technology to locate certain devices, including AirTags and the latest iPhones, with a high degree of accuracy – but Bluetooth 6.0 will extend this service to a much wider range of hardware.
