It has long been recognised that a smartphone’s battery, whether Android or iOS, is one of its essential components. It must be looked after to maximise its lifespan and ensure it continues to function for many years. Android 15 is expected to help with this soon, by limiting the charge applied to the battery – a new feature Google is currently developing.
Many Android smartphone brands, and Apple itself, seek to protect batteries by applying a very simple rule. By limiting the charge to 80%, they manage to extend the battery’s lifespan, thereby increasing usage time without causing ageing issues.
Google is preparing to introduce this same feature in Android 15, to provide this protection for its Pixel devices and other smartphones. Although it is not yet available in this version, code has been found showing that it is set to arrive soon, thereby ensuring something important.
From what we have seen, Google will offer an option that optimises charging and another that limits it to 80% of the battery’s capacity. It was hoped that there would be an option offering greater control, but it appears to be limited to adaptive charging or the 80% limit.
It will automatically throttle charging once the battery reaches 80%, so it makes sense to choose between the two options. If you’re not a heavy user and are always near a power socket, you can limit your Pixel’s battery to 80% charge to extend its lifespan, especially if you tend to keep your phone for a few years.
It is unlikely that the feature will be included in the public release of Android 15, which is expected to arrive with the Pixel 9 series next month. Instead, the charging optimisation may be part of the first rollout of Android 15. It may also debut on the Pixel 9 before being rolled out to older Pixel devices.
The truth is that this is a significant change and one that is expected to extend the lifespan of smartphones. If it isn’t available straight away, Google will certainly do everything it can to ensure it reaches Android 15 and all its smartphones quickly, which will benefit directly as a result.
